Olga Mutovina, a journalist from Irkutsk, is the author and editor of the magazine "People of Baikal." Until February 2022, the magazine covered life in the remote areas of the Irkutsk region and Buryatia. Afterward, it explored the impact of war on their lives.

Thus, Buryatia became one of the first regions to receive coffins from Ukraine. The list of the dead, maintained by "People of Baikal" through online obituaries, now includes over 1000 names. This figure is clearly lower than the actual figure, but the region's residents have no other. The authorities do not release casualty data.

Olga Mutovina discusses why people are willing to accept war and what can be done to awaken them in the "Eyewitnesses" project: "I spoke with a wounded mobilized soldier from Regiment No. 1439—out of a company of 200, only two remained, and he was one of those two. They were coordinated by drones, and their commanders refused to accompany them... People are irritated and dissatisfied, but their attitude remains: 'I don't care.' Passive."
