He sent a video to NeMoskva, showing his daily life: how he keeps warm, how much he pays for it, and how he washes the dishes. He also talked about his future plans.
"Here are two heaters blazing away, the thermometer's 16 degrees Celsius. This month I paid 3706 rubles [for electricity], next month I'll pay six thousand because it was a cold month. I wash the dishes here in the trailer, in a basin, and I take them to the water heater to rinse." — says Yuri Balabonkin, a disabled person of the 3rd group, in the video.
His house was burned down for his proactive stance—as a village elder, he demanded that the cemetery be cleared of debris and the roads cleared of snow. The district administration offered to provide him with housing 30 kilometers from Kumino. Balabonkin refused, defending his rights to housing in his native land.
According to him, there are people in the village who help with his daily life and support his position, while others call him "crazy," "drunkard," and even "beggar" online. The pensioner believes this is either a plot by the district administration, or these people have no self-esteem at all.
And so they live precariously: drinking rusty water, making their way through rough roads, disorganization all around... I'm already in a bad way, and they're killing me for trying to defend my rights. In the entire district, there are three or four active people; the rest have not only resigned themselves to this whole "swamp," but even nod along and jeer. I've thought a lot about whether it was worth fighting for a better life with people like that? No. But still, I fought for the village where I grew up. — Balabonkin commented to NeMoskva.
