It seemed to me that the people had thrown off their chains and despotism had collapsed. I didn't realize that the basis of what had happened was a military rebellion, spontaneously sparked by the conditions created by three years of war. And that at this foundation lay the seed of future anarchy and destruction.
Born July 20, 1869 in Tsarskoye Selo, in the family of the Minister of Justice. He graduated from the law school in St. Petersburg and studied criminal law in Germany.
From the age of 25, he served in the State Chancellery, taught law, and edited several liberal publications. He was one of the founders of the Kadet Party, which demanded that the monarch's rule be limited by parliament. For these views, he lost his job and the right to teach. In 1906, he became a deputy of the First State Duma.
From the point of view of the principle of popular representation, we can say only one thing: let the executive power be subordinate to the legislative power.
After the dissolution of the Duma, he signed the Vyborg Appeal, which called for civil disobedience: not paying taxes, not serving in the military. He served three months in Kresty Prison for this.
He was mobilized during the First World War: first he served as an ensign, then as a regimental adjutant.
After the February Revolution, he worked as the manager of the Provisional Government and was responsible for preparing laws.
After the October Revolution, he was arrested as the leader of a "bourgeois party," but a few months later he was able to leave for Crimea and join the White movement. In 1919, he emigrated to Europe, where he published the magazine "Novaya Rossiya" (New Russia) and the newspaper "Rul" (Rul').
Killed during a failed assassination attempt on the leader of the cadets Pavel MilyukovaWhile he was giving a lecture on the fate of Russia and the émigré movement, a monarchist fanatic ran up to Milyukov and fired several rounds from a revolver. The bullets missed. Trying to stop the attacker, Nabokov pinned him to the floor, but at that moment he was killed by a second attacker: one of the three bullets entered his heart.
