Ministry of Education, we've got a cancellation! Next year, Russian universities will abolish the concept of a "bachelor's degree," and students will study for five and a half years instead of four.
About this today said Minister of education Valery Falkov, speaking to State Duma deputies.
According to him, starting in 2025, the concepts of "bachelor's" and "master's" will disappear from the Russian higher education system: there will be only higher and higher specialized education.
In addition, students will have their studies extended: experience has shown that four years is not enough to acquire knowledge.
Falkov believes that the new system will provide more opportunities for graduates.
«Under the old logic and the old system, only bachelors had the right to enroll in and receive specialized education, that is, a master's degree, he said. — Under the new logic, anyone who has received a higher education can also go and receive specialized education for free."
Russia transitioned to the Bologna system of education in 2011. Under it, students received a broad specialization (bachelor's degree) over four years, then chose a more specialized field and studied for another one to three years.
In April 2022, Russia was excluded from the Bologna Process after the Russian Union of Rectors spoke out in support of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
A month later, Education Minister Falkov stated that Russia itself had planned to abandon the Bologna system, and that it should be treated as “a stage already lived through.”
It was, after all, a sincere, normal attempt to integrate into the international space and become an integral part of it, Ilya Yablokov, a lecturer at the University of Sheffield (UK), lamented the abolition of the Bologna system. He believed that it had worked well for students, giving them the opportunity to study abroad.
