We don't know what they were guarding: Novosibirsk police admitted they don't understand why they were on duty at the Navalny memorial.

People Novosibirsk began bringing flowers to the monument to the victims of political repression immediately after learning of the death Alexey Navalny 16 February.

That same evening, a spontaneous memorial cordoned off The police blocked the monument with warning tape, and stopped people from approaching. Despite the severe cold, security forces remained on duty at the monument for two weeks, preventing anyone from laying flowers until the politician's body was laid to rest.

Outraged by this, a NeMoskva reader sent a letter to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, demanding that the police conduct be investigated for compliance with the law. Here's the response he received:

He also explained that the police stood at the memorial “due to a lack of understanding of the reason for its placement.”

By the way, in the first days after Navalny's death, residents of Novosibirsk told NeMoskva reported that the police were preventing them from accessing the monument, citing a report that it was mined. However, no one had ever seen any bomb disposal experts there.
