A landfill is planned for construction near Russia's largest cranberry plantation. Local residents and environmentalists are against it.
Construction of a landfill in the village Miskovo Inhabitants Kostroma district discussed At the roundtable, they adopted a resolution declaring the project "ill-considered" and the construction "inadmissible."
The landfill is expected to accommodate waste from all over Kostroma and six other municipalities. Russia's largest cranberry plantation is located nearby.
"The site chosen for the landfill is prone to flooding. It slopes toward the Meza River, and groundwater flows through springs into a pond. These three factors, according to Sanitary Regulations, preclude the possibility of constructing such a facility on the chosen site.", - says in introductory film, which was shown to the discussion participants.
However, according to environmentalists who participated in the roundtable, the designer chosen by the Kostroma region's leadership "pretended that the site had no specific features."
"Cranberry festivals are regularly held in Miskovo, but the plantation can't survive without water from the Meza. Kayaking trips on our river are now being actively promoted. How can you imagine them if the reservoir is contaminated with dioxins and other substances? I believe the Sandogorsk rural settlement is being destroyed!" said Olga, local teacher Klavdiya Toropova.
The round table ended with chants of: “Meza is not a dump!”
A scandal surrounding the construction of a waste landfill a few kilometers from Miskovo erupted in the spring of 2023. The project is being actively promoted by the Sandogorskoye rural settlement administration and regional authorities. It had previously failed both state and public environmental assessments and was sent back for revision.
