Adelaide Gertsyk “Unreasonable” M.: Rhino, 2023

A rather unknown story by Adelaida Gertsyk, a rather unknown representative of the Silver Age. It centers on a young, otherworldly woman who fits neither the roles of wife, mother, nor lover, living as if parallel to the world around her: she freezes during dialogue, feels guilty about a misplaced pencil, and tells strange tales to her son. This small book may seem trivial, but its main charm lies precisely in this: the main point lies not in the plot, but in the poetic beauty of the heroine's transition from the desire not to exist to the delight of embracing the miracle of life itself. The story was first published in 1916, but, as they say, has not lost its relevance.
“She felt sorry for the pencil and the book, she knew that they could be bored on one table and happy on another, she knew that she needed to help them in their dark, oppressed life.”
