Cormac McCarthy “Sattrey” M.: Foreigner, 2024

The first reason to pay attention to this novel, considered one of Cormac McCarthy's most important works, is that it has been published in Russian for the first time. The second is that it is considered almost autobiographical. The third is determined by McCarthy's epochal stature as a writer. Cormac McCarthy began work on the novel in the late 1950s, published it in 1979, and in interviews later in life, he admitted that much of it was based on his youth. However, the text cannot be classified as autofiction, despite biographical similarities—from life episodes to the locations of McCarthy and his protagonist. "Suttree" is a fictional and highly atmospheric story of a loner who spends his time drinking and hanging out with marginal friends, but is essentially searching for himself, escaping his former comfortable life.
"That year there were locusts. They howled in the green trees like panthers, floundering in hundreds on the face of the river."
