Animal rights activists in the regions protested against the euthanasia of stray animals.

A solitary picket in the city center came out activist Elvira Sharafutdinova with posters: "It's not euthanasia, it's murder! Don't hide behind pretty words!" и "We are against animal euthanasia! We support a humane direction for Russia's development."

About 30 residents out to a rally against changes to the law "On Responsible Treatment of Animals," which could allow the euthanasia of stray dogs and cats.
Participants also expressed dissatisfaction with the conditions at the local shelter. One activist reported that, according to her information, the dogs there give "a shovel of dry food and snow."
Where do the protests come from?
A bill to regulate the number of stray animals was introduced to the State Duma on February 28, and the speaker supports it. Vyacheslav VolodinA bill currently being considered prohibits the release of captured animals back onto the streets and allows for their euthanization. If adopted, regions will be able to independently determine the length of time animals are kept in shelters.
In 2023, regions were given the right to independently decide how to handle homeless animals. Some regions have already established time limits for keeping animals in shelters. In 17 regions, allowed "euthanize" homeless animals.
