More accurately, a new terminal has opened—the international airport complex isn't yet fully operational. The first aircraft have already landed, and as of today, all flights in Kamchatka Krai will be handled here.

The airport has been under construction since 2021 and spent more 28 billion rubles. The passenger service area is five times larger than in the old terminal. Check-in now has 30 counters for domestic and international flights (versus 12 in the old terminal). You can now board the plane directly from the building via jet bridges, and baggage claim is also convenient.

The complex's capacity is 1145 passengers per hour. By the end of 2024, Kamchatka Airport had handled over 931 passengers. This represents 34 days of peak passenger traffic for the new airport.

The building was designed by Italian architect Claudio SilvestrinThe shape embodies the nature of Kamchatka, namely, the caldera of a volcano (a depression formed by the collapse of a peak). The prototype is a volcano BurntBut the complex also resembles a spaceship from an old movie. A 5-star hotel will be located in the center.

Local residents are actively discussing the new airport. Some are delighted, while others are writing about numerous imperfections and cheap materials, and that people can't charge their phones because "there isn't a single working outlet available." Some are questioning the scale: "They're so sure that so many people will fly to our ruined region 😂".

Many residents are perplexed by the design of the area near the entrance—they feature pillars that resemble either tree trunks or solidified lava flows. They've been nicknamed "brown legs," "dead forest trees," and "kakahi."
