Valery Limarenko He held a meeting dedicated to the investment development of the Kuril Islands. He recalled that the Kuril Islands are a special tax zone with "the best preferences." The authorities, together with investors, plan to develop three main areas: tourism, as the area boasts "beautiful, pristine nature with volcanoes"; marine farming, which offers leases for scallop, sea urchin, and sea cucumber farming; and information technology.

"Everyone knows that the Sakhalin Region is a digital region. And with such a regime and digital infrastructure, the Kuril Islands offer a place to live and work for all IT professionals from around the world," сказал Limarenko. In his opinion, the Kuril Islands are a "ticket to the future."

In 2019, an underwater communications line was laid to the Kuril Islands, significantly increasing internet speeds on the islands. However, the islands are still lacking a developed IT industry, as is any developed infrastructure for living.

The Sakhalin Region authorities are actively trying to attract specialists from various fields and have created a special site, which described the benefits of living on the "dream islands" and job openings. However, in the information technology section, there's currently only one opening—a UAV developer and assembler.

To leave the Kuril Islands, you first need to get to the airport on Sakhalin. Traveling to Moscow by plane can take more than a day. And, for example, traveling to Japan, which is just around the corner, can take up to 30 hours and cost around 90 rubles.
