The Investigative Committee confirmed the death of two Azerbaijanis during mass arrests in Yekaterinburg.

The searches on June 27 were carried out as part of the investigation into contract killings in Yekaterinburg From 2001 to 2011, more than 50 people were detained at their residences, the Kaspiy café, and the Baku Plaza shopping center. All were Russian citizens of Azerbaijani descent.

Several people suffered serious injuries. The lawyer of one of the detainees, Mazakhir Safarova, claimed his client's ribs were broken and that he confessed under duress. Relatives of the deceased Safarov brothers are also certain that their deaths were violent.

Azerbaijan has demanded an investigation into the raid in Yekaterinburg. The day before, the editorial director of Sputnik Azerbaijan was detained at the office. Igor Kartavykh and editor-in-chief Evgeniya BelousovaFootage appeared in the media of men being forced to hold their arms while being escorted out of the building. The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the Azerbaijani ambassador to Moscow "in connection with Baku's unfriendly actions and the illegal detention of Russian journalists."

All concerts, exhibitions, and tours by Russian organizations have been cancelled in Azerbaijan. The Baku Ministry of Culture directly accused Russia of "deliberate extrajudicial killings" and emphasized that such incidents have become systemic. The Azerbaijani parliament also canceled the delegation's visit to Moscow in protest.
