Volunteers who rescued birds from Anapa's oil-stained beaches owe a million rubles in electricity bills.
She told me about her electricity debts. Ksenia Mikhailova, who heads the Zhemchuzhnaya rehabilitation center.
According to her, the birds affected by the fuel oil spill were housed in a hangar at a local winery, which was not designed for winter use. To protect the birds from hypothermia, volunteers installed heat lamps and heating mats for each bird. The hangar itself was also heated electrically.
At first, officials promised that the regional budget would provide assistance with electricity bills. Then they started talking about support from the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
However, the bills remain unpaid to this day: the debt amounts to one million rubles.
"We have to pay the electricity bills ourselves," explained Ksenia Mikhailova to the publication "Morning South".
Despite this, the rehabilitation center continues to accept new birds affected by the fuel oil spill: it still remains on the bottom, and the birds get dirty when they dive.
The center is currently looking for sponsors to continue its work.
