A new procedure for electing mayors has been approved in two Siberian cities at once – the governor will now propose them.

“This law is forced, it follows directly from the municipal reform that the region adopted at the end of spring, — writes the Telegram channel "Krasnoyarsk Lion". "In fact, the city councilors have no choice here—why would they oppose the Gray House? All they have to do is formally bring city laws into line with regional ones."

Previously, in both Omsk and Krasnoyarsk, the mayor was chosen by a selection committee of deputies and gubernatorial representatives. Anyone over 21 could nominate a candidate. The new format, made possible by the local government reform law, deprives deputies of the opportunity to hold protest votes and maximizes the controllability of the mayoral election.

This format for selecting the mayor has already been adopted in Ulyanovsk, Orenburg regions and at least 12 more regions of Russia.
