The canal embankment in St. Petersburg was dismantled to save a cat.

Volunteers of the St. Petersburg animal protection organization "Koshkispas" rescued a cat that spent a week sitting deep in the stone cladding of the embankment Griboyedov Canal. 

Animal rights activists received a call about a trapped cat last Saturday, but it was nowhere to be found. The cat had likely gotten scared and crawled deep into the hole. Even a camera scan of the cavities proved ineffective. They searched for several days: they set up a cat trap in front of the hole in the hopes the animal would climb in on its own, and they climbed down the embankment to see where the pitiful meowing was coming from.  

On November 13, a rise in the canal's water level was predicted, and the cat was at risk of dying. Volunteers then removed the mortar in the crack between the granite slabs and cleared a path to freedom for the cat. However, the cat refused to come out on his own, forcing rescuers to resort to force. 

How to found out "Paper," the cat turned out to be a house cat. He had been lost two weeks earlier. His owner had searched in vain in the basement and neighboring yards. He is currently at the veterinary clinic, after which he will be released to his owner.
