A Krasnoyarsk deputy proposed discouraging private clinics from performing abortions.
Member of the Legislative Assembly Irina Ivanova of the Krasnoyarsk Territory proposed to exclude abortions from the practice of private medical clinics. With her initiative, she came forward during the discussion of the candidacy of the new chairman of the regional government.
Ivanova stated that abortions should be performed only in state-run medical facilities. She cited the high abortion rate in the region compared to other regions of the Russian Federation as her argument, while acknowledging that she does not have precise statistics. However, Ivanova emphasized that she does not advocate an outright ban on abortions in private clinics.
"Why I'd like state clinics to do this is because I personally encountered, while being seen at a perinatal center, several women who had already decided, almost at the last stage, not to terminate their pregnancies. Because someone told them to, someone supported them."
said the deputy.
The new chairman of the Krasnoyarsk Legislative Assembly Alexey Medvedev In response, he stated that the regional government would soon be considering a set of measures to support the birth rate. Commenting on Ivanova's proposal, he did not directly address the possibility of banning abortions in private clinics, noting only that they "need to be worked with" and "convinced."
In recent years, measures aimed at reducing the number of abortions and stimulating the birth rate have been repeatedly discussed at the federal level. A number of regions are introducing additional support measures for pregnant women, as well as psychological counseling programs prior to deciding to terminate a pregnancy. In particular, the head of Andrey Turchak of the Altai Territorydemanded private clinics should refuse to perform abortions, and in Yekaterinburg already several private clinics refused from carrying out such operations.
