On March 1, a law banning the promotion of drugs online came into effect in Russia. Now, music artists and labels, among others, can face hefty fines for mentioning banned substances.
Rapper Slava KPSS replaced banned substances in his tracks on Yandex.Music with the cry "Roskomnadzor" call This is their "collaboration with the guys from the department." The song "Mama, I Love" by the band Anacondaz was already half composed of censored sounds and omissions: not only "drug trafficking" and "cocaine" disappeared, but even "Satan" and the phrase "I betrayed the country."
Rap group "AK-47" replaced "a kilogram of action" for "a kilogram of shavukh", and Boulevard Depo turned his song "Smells Like Refugee Spirit" into an instrumental composition without words.
Self-censorship has hit not only songs whose drug references seem even vaguely street-speaking, but also hit Russian rock songs that became popular decades ago. Together with #нерадо_НеМосква, we'll look at what's happened to just a few of them on Yandex.Music.
