350 dead in the war with Ukraine—that's comparable to the population of an entire city. For example, Vladimir, Belgorod, or Kaluga.

The new, reliable estimate of the data from a joint study by Meduza and Mediazona includes for the first time those declared dead or missing by court order—that is, without a body. This represents approximately 90 people. Another 261 are "regular" deaths from the beginning of the "SVO" to the end of 2025.

The journalists note that they used lists of names of the dead compiled by Mediazona jointly with the BBC Russian Service, as well as data from the Registry of Inheritance Cases. However, they did not include foreign citizens who fought on the side of the Russian Armed Forces.

Among the Russians killed in the war, there may be some who are still officially listed as alive. Neither their relatives nor military units may have yet applied for recognition of their deaths. Therefore, the actual number of war dead may be even higher.
