According to investigators, Ponomarenko allegedly used violence against FSIN officers after refusing to comply with their demands. The journalist denied the charges and stated during the trial that her actions were self-defense.

Ponomarenko's defense insisted on an acquittal, citing the absence of a full video recording of the incident from the cell in the case file.

In prison, Ponomarenko faces constant abuse. Due to the torture conditions, she attempted suicide several times.
