111 wounds: Vera Pekhteleva's killer from Kemerovo is now fighting in Ukraine.

"Tonight, Vera's mother, Oksana, told me that Kanyus was posting photos of himself in camouflage, holding a gun. At first, Vera's family thought it was fake, but then they contacted the Federal Penitentiary Service. The response they received was: 'Convict Vladislav Romanovich Kanyus, born August 4, 1996, was transferred on April 28, 2023, to the custody of the Federal Penitentiary Service for the Rostov Region.'"

She added that Vera's family has not responded to complaints about the lack of information regarding Kanyus's whereabouts. A cassation appeal in this case was scheduled for the coming days. It is unclear to Vera Pekhteleva's family how the convicted man will be present at the hearing.

"And what next?" writes Anna Popova. "A pardon. The Duma passed laws exempting contract soldiers from prosecution for minor and moderate crimes, and for PMCs, a simple pardon. Putin publicly admitted to pardoning them. And in yesterday's address, he called them 'patriots of Russia, devoted to their people and state.'"

As a reminder, Vladislav Kanyus was sentenced to 17 years in a maximum-security penal colony. Kanyus inflicted 111 wounds on Vera Pekhteleva. The murder received widespread publicity because police officers took an hour and a half to respond to the call. Five officers who ignored calls about the girl's screams are currently awaiting sentencing.
