Cancel Unlimited YouTube Access
State Duma deputy Anton Gorelkin, a member of the United Russia party and deputy chairman of the Information Policy Committee, proposed an idea to mobile operators to reduce equipment wear and tear. He suggests reducing data consumption by eliminating unlimited access to YouTube. The reason for this proposal is that internet speeds in the regions are declining due to a shortage of necessary equipment for cellular networks.

"I'm ready to give mobile operators a great idea on how to reduce equipment wear and tear right now. To do this, they need to reduce their data usage by eliminating unlimited access to YouTube. According to various sources, the American video hosting service's share of traffic ranges from 30 to 50 percent, and all mobile operators offer options that make it unchargeable for a modest monthly fee of 100-200 rubles. I don't think the FAS would object to a joint decision by market participants to eliminate this option and treat YouTube traffic equally with Russian services," Anton Gorelkin wrote on his Telegram channel.
Anton Gorelkin previously stated that the Russian service VK Video could well create an alternative to YouTube. Many experts believe that VK Video will be able to compete more effectively with YouTube than, say, RuTube. invested It made a lot of money, but it still hasn't replaced YouTube for users. Proposals to restrict or block YouTube in Russia have been made repeatedly. Recently, Rostelecom tested a service designed to filter content on YouTube. NeMoskva even asked Russians what they would делатьif YouTube is blocked in Russia.
