An opponent of "military action in Ukraine" has announced her candidacy for president of Russia.

"The country needs immediate change: an end to hostilities, democratic reforms, the release of political prisoners. We must repeal all inhumane laws and restore relations with the outside world," said Ekaterina Duntsova, a resident of the Tver region, on her campaign website.

Journalist and former deputy of the Rzhev City Duma Ekaterina Duntsova pushed her candidacy for the Russian presidency in the 2024 elections. She was supported by the project Our Headquarters, working with democratic candidates with an anti-war stance in the Russian presidential elections.

"Friends with whom I discussed my decision asked me, 'Do you seriously believe that anything can be changed in modern Russia through these elections? Do you believe you'll be allowed to run and registered as a candidate? Aren't you afraid of being jailed?' Of course, I have no illusions about these 'elections,' and, like any normal person, I'm afraid. But I do have hope that Russia can be changed democratically. I'm convinced that it's worth trying, that there are many of us, and any attempt is better than inaction," she said.
