19 February 2000 year

On the night of February 19-20 in Svetlogorsk Kaliningrad region suddenly died Anatoly SobchakAt the time of his death, he was a trusted person of a candidate for the Russian presidency. Vladimir Putin.

Power corrupts people

Was born in Chita In 1937. At 19, he entered the law faculty of Leningrad University. He defended his thesis on the topic of liability "for causing harm by the action of a source of increased danger." When he was teaching, the law faculty students were Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin и Dmitry MedvedevThe latter posted propaganda posters for Sobchak before the 1989 elections of the USSR People's Deputies.

There are two dangers. The first is obvious—communist revenge. The second is less obvious, but no less threatening—the danger of the imperceptible, constant degeneration of a democratic state into a police state; a state ruled by the security forces.

Being a people's deputy, he investigated Tbilisi events — the violent dispersal of an anti-government rally under the slogan "The USSR is a prison of nations" in April 1989. Twenty-one people were killed and 290 injured. He became an honorary citizen of Tbilisi, where a monument to him stands.

Power is power only when it is respected by the people, when it is based on the will of the people.

In 1990, he headed the Leningrad City Council. He brought his graduate student Medvedev to work there. At the same time, KGB Lieutenant Colonel Putin joined Sobchak's team. In 1991, he became the first mayor of Leningrad, restored the city's historical name. He spoke out against the coup and for democracy—at least in words.

In 1996, he lost the gubernatorial election. Putin was his campaign manager. In 1997, he was implicated in a criminal case for corruption in city government. Putin helped him get kicked out. ParisThe case was closed after two years.

Sobchak returned. In February 2000, he became a confidant of the presidential candidate:

Volodya, just don't get more bronze.

He died shortly afterward while traveling on a campaign trail. Officially, it was from acute heart failure. After an independent examination, his wife, Lyudmila Narusova, claimed to know the cause of the cardiac arrest. And it wasn't a heart attack. She declined to reveal the exact cause.
