Scientists from Perm have taught a program to instantly read road signs.

Team development Perm polytechnic university It will be possible to install it in your car, and eventually, to integrate it into Russian cars during the production stage. How reported The university's press service told NeMoskve that this will reduce the number of road accidents, as most currently occur because drivers fail to recognize road signs and violate traffic rules.

According to traffic police statistics, the accident rate on Russian roads increased by 5,1% in 2023 compared to 2022. In the first 10 months of last year alone, there were 110 accidents, resulting in over 11,8 deaths and over 137 injuries.

“Our program is written in Python and weighs only 0,1 MB,” explains an engineer from the Department of Information Technology and Automated Systems at PNIPU Alexander Larionov. "It recognizes road signs in real time from a video stream. In sufficient light, the signs are clearly visible at a distance of approximately 25 meters using low-beam headlights. The system then sends a signal via a voice assistant or a head-up display."

The development is completely independent of the internet and GPS. It works reliably and on any vehicle.

Scientists are currently studying how the program works in action. Devices with this software are then expected to begin selling. The system will gradually "learn" the newly introduced symbols through periodic updates, just like mobile apps.
