His mother was an actress, his father was a director, a favorite of Stalin, who often served as a toastmaster at his parties.
The doors to Sofiko's parents' home were always open to guests: famous artists would stay until the early hours. However, the girl herself never dreamed of the big stage; she wanted to become a doctor.
Right after school she married an aspiring director. Georgy Shengela, who was her father's student. She went to Moscow with him. Out of curiosity, she attempted to take the exams at VGIK and GITIS, and was accepted to both.
She gained fame already in her first year: she starred in the film “Our Yard,” which won a gold medal at the World Youth Festival.
After defending her thesis, she declined invitations from leading Moscow theaters and returned to her native Tbilisi. She performed in theater and film.
At 33, she starred in a cult film Sergei Parajanov "The Color of Pomegranates," where she played six roles at once, including a young man and his lover. She didn't speak a word throughout the film, relying solely on facial expressions and body language.

Sofiko has appeared in over 50 films. One of her most memorable roles was as a telephone operator in "Looking for a Woman."
She is the only Soviet actress to have won the Best Actress award at international competitions seven times.
She raised two sons in her first marriage. At 35, she fell in love with an actor. Kote Makharadze, who was better known as a football commentator. She married him. She continued to entertain a huge number of guests, generously setting the tables, and masterfully delivering toasts.

In 2000, she opened a one-man show in her parents' home. She maintained her steadfast pace of life even after learning she had cancer.
I won't deny myself this pleasure! I live once and I leave this life only once.
She died on March 2, 2008, at the age of 70.
