The death toll in a traffic accident in Blagoveshchensk has risen to five. The driver who struck the pedestrians has been arrested.
Two more victims died in the hospital overnight, the regional Ministry of Health press service reported. According to media reports, they are a 15-year-old boy and a 50-year-old woman. The total number of fatalities is five, including three minors.
Two victims are currently in intensive care, their condition assessed as extremely serious. Two others will be transferred from intensive care to the trauma department today. The victims include two teenagers and a 19-year-old woman.
The driver who hit people was arrested today for 2 months. "I'm deeply sorry. I committed a terrible crime. I deserve the harshest punishment."" he said in court. He also said that he got behind the wheel after drinking vodka: "The bottle was for two, 0,7"The culprit faces up to 15 years in prison.
Blagoveshchensk residents say the city has never seen such a horrific accident. They continue to bring flowers and toys to the site of the tragedy. Entertainment events have been canceled in the city. Residents have created petition with a demand to protect pedestrians on Vasilenko Street by installing protective barriers.
