Time to read: 2 minutes(s)

We wanted the best, but it turned out to be a toilet.

В Revda, Sverdlovsk Oblast The city administration has locked the reading pergolas installed as part of a federal improvement program.

Chekhovsky Prospect — a project to improve Chekhov Street in Revda, which is being implemented under a federal program. Before the work began, officials held focus groups, where people discussed what they would like to see on the street. No one asked for pergolas, but they were included in the project anyway.

"Avenue"The space, which runs alongside residential buildings, is divided into three zones. Two of them have pergolas, more like booths, installed—and no books have been brought in, apparently in the belief that people will bring books to the new reading spaces themselves. However, some residents have begun to come there with beer and sunflower seeds, and also to use the restroom (there are no public restrooms in the newly renovated space).

After numerous complaints, the pergolas were cleared of debris, washed, and locked. Officials say they will only reopen them once video surveillance is installed on Prospekt, but how the cameras will encourage people to read rather than drink on the streets remains unclear.
