The State Duma has proposed banning alcohol sales on Sundays and dedicating the day to "family, sports, and art."

The corresponding bill was developed by a State Duma deputy from the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia. Andrey Svintsov. 

"Monday is a workday. Although sometimes people forget this, continuing to indulge in alcohol until Sunday evening. It's time to correct this situation. The day off should be dedicated to family, sports, and art.",” Svintsov wrote on his Telegram channel.

According to the deputy, abstaining from alcohol on Sundays will not only will this provide a significant increase in the birth rate, but it will also create a powerful impetus in the fight against alcoholism among the population.

Commentators on the parliamentary Telegram channel were skeptical of the initiative:

"It seems to me that Deputy Andrei Svintsov got a failing grade in both history classes (domestic and world) in school. Otherwise, Deputy Andrei Svintsov would know what such bans lead to." 

"The only way to increase the birth rate is by lowering prices in stores and making housing affordable!!!!! When will you finally understand this..." 

"Give people salaries like those of parliamentarians (the birth rate will immediately break all records)."

Earlier in Vologda Oblast, against, have limited Alcohol sales hours on weekdays: from March 1, it can only be purchased from 12 noon to 14 p.m.
