"We remember Stalingrad, but we live in Volgograd." Volgograd residents sign a petition against the city's renaming. 

Petition "Against the renaming of Volgograd to Stalingrad: the voice of those who live in this city" published on the portal Change.org Volgograd activist Dmitry Yakimov in response to the actress Maria Shukshina, which on the eve of Victory Day advocated for a renaming - "in the name of our grandfathers, and for the younger generation, great-grandfathers, who won with the Red Banner in their hands and the name of Stalin on their lips." 

"Most of the comments online in support of the renaming weren't from Volgograd residents. We're not against memory—we're for life. We remember Stalingrad, but we live in Volgograd.", the petition says.

Volgograd residents have repeatedly spoken out against the city's renaming. For example, according to polls conducted by VTsIOM and Russian Field in 2023, there was opposition to the idea. stated 67% and 74% of city residents, respectively. 

At the end of April, Putin signed A decree renaming Volgograd's Gumrak Airport to Stalingrad, allegedly at the request of Volgograd Region veterans and members of the "SVO." Many Volgograd residents disliked the renaming, but no one consulted the residents.
