"HIV infection is firmly taking root in the population": the threat of a new outbreak is present in at least 11 regions of Russia.

Among the indicators that warn of the epidemic's transition to a new stage is the growing percentage of pregnant women diagnosed with HIV.

The World Health Organization notes that if this figure exceeds one percent for three consecutive years, it means the virus has entered a generalized stage (that is, it has become “firmly established in the population”).

According to the project “To be precise”, this situation has developed already in at least 11 regions of Russia.

The most severe situation is in the Siberian Federal District – in five regions at once (Krasnoyarsk и Altai Krai, Kemerovo, Irkutsk и Tomsk region). Moreover, the Kemerovo region is also the all-Russian leader in the proportion of infected pregnant women: 2,3%.

Also among the regions where the share of infected pregnant women has exceeded 1% for three years now are Samara, Orenburg, Sverdlovsk, Tyumen, Chelyabinsk и Leningrad Region.

In total, 1,2 million people were registered with HIV in Russia last year. The national average for pregnant women infected is 0,6%. However, the number of regions where this rate is above 1% is growing: three more regions will be registered in 2024.
