Hooray! Residents of a district in the Vologda region were able to stop deforestation.
In the Vozhegodsky district of the Vologda region, near Beketovo-42, they planned to cut down a forest.
"Nobody's planning to build anything there, they're just cutting down trees, like they do all over the country. It's just a way to make big money," Sergei, a resident of the Vozhegodsky district, told NeMoskva. "Right now, private individuals are doing all the cutting, and they lease the forests, so they do whatever they want. The forestry authorities have no control over anything."
But after the residents' outrage, the logging was stopped.
"Well, we didn't expect this at all, but it actually happened! Following the second meeting with residents, decisions were made to adjust the boundaries of the area where logging will take place and ensure that the habitats of rare animals and plants will not be affected," Wrote in the district group.
In the area of the site, on the shores of Lake Korgozero, where they planned to harvest timber, inhabit Siberian salamander (an amphibian listed in the Red Book—editor's note) and lady's slipper orchids. Furthermore, the enterprise would have destroyed the only path to the cemetery. Now, loggers have also promised to repair the roads in the village.
