Scientists from Tomsk have developed the first robotic foot prosthesis in Russia.
Unlike models currently on the Russian market, which rely on mechanical elements, the prosthesis developed by the Tomsk State University team guarantees precise reproduction of natural biomechanical characteristics.
“We are developing software that will allow a robotic device to replicate some of the biomechanical movement patterns of a healthy foot and help patients restore a gait closer to a healthy one,” explains a researcher at the TSU Medical Instrumentation Laboratory. Artem Bureev. “The prosthesis will allow the rest of the musculoskeletal system to function correctly—without negative impact on the overlying joints, ligaments, and spine.”
According to Bureev, more than 100,000 events are held in Russia every year. 70 thousands Amputation surgeries. The main causes are trauma, diabetic vascular disease, or congenital defects. The TSU scientists' project will address the need for domestically produced, highly functional prosthetics, making them more accessible.
The invention is currently in the physical modeling stage. Next year, a pilot model will be developed and its quality and safety will be tested.
