The Irkutsk Region Governor can now dismiss and appoint mayors at his own discretion.

Corresponding amendments to the Regional Charter accepted in the final reading by the deputies of the Legislative Assembly Irkutsk region. how сообщает press service of the parliament, now the governor (this post is currently occupied by Igor Kobzev) will receive the right to “form personnel proposals and appoint acting heads of municipalities, initiate the termination of the powers of the head, including his dismissal.” 

Municipal reform in Russia has resulted in the de facto elimination of local government. For example, in the Irkutsk Region, 216 village councils are being abolished, and the current 20 regional districts and 12 municipal districts will be replaced by 32 municipal districts with their own administrations and district councils. City residents Nizhneudinsk recorded video message protesting against the reform.

Protests against the liquidation of local government continue in Altai Republicof the Krasnoyarsk Krai and in other regions.
