Whoa, the end of the line! Mounted police are proving to be an expensive luxury for the Astrakhan region.

The building of the equestrian base of the Astrakhan Department of Internal Affairs in the Chernoyarsk district put up for auction - the experiment of creating a mounted police force turned out to be too expensive for the budget.

"In the end, maintaining police horses turned out to be too expensive and impractical, so the project, which was never properly implemented, was ultimately abandoned."- сообщает Astrakhan edition "Arbuz".

Mounted police are a division of the Ministry of Internal Affairs created to patrol parks and difficult-to-access areas, as well as to maintain order at public events, such as protest rallies. 

The unit was created in 2013 on the initiative of the former head of the regional Department of Internal Affairs Grigory KulikAfter the project was launched in the Chernyakhovsky district, mounted police were going to be introduced and in Astrakhan. 

The owner of a small private stable in one of the regions told NeMoskva that she needs to spend 10 to 15 rubles monthly on horse feed alone. 

"Necessary vaccinations and medications cost from 30 rubles a year, and the price tag for unscheduled tests and treatment averages 100 rubles. Equipment is very expensive: a used saddle can be purchased for 20 rubles, while a new one costs around 100 rubles.", — the interlocutor explained. 

Mounted police work in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Perm и a few more large Russian cities.
