Tatarstan and Omsk Oblast have joined the ranks of regions that have legalized the killing of stray animals.

Members of Parliament in Tatarstan voted The vote is unanimous in favor of animal euthanasia. However, it is stipulated that it will only be performed in "extraordinary situations": when an animal displays unprovoked aggression, attacks a person, is a carrier of dangerous infections, or has severe, incurable injuries.

Lawmakers are convinced that the new measures will help reduce the number of attacks by stray animals on people. However, animal rights activists and professional dog handlers have a different opinion: despite the killings, the population will continue to grow. The problem can only be solved by sterilizing animals and placing them in shelters, and, most importantly, by working with people to ensure they are responsible when acquiring animals and not abandoning them on the streets.

The law on euthanasia of stray animals is currently in effect in almost 30 regions. Today, deputies in Omsk region voted for "total euthanasia of stray dogs," which would allow even sterilized animals to be euthanized under an "emergency situation."

At the same time, some regions refuse to euthanize animals for fundamental reasons. Among them, a special place is occupied by Ryazan region: in September there have opened The first center in Russia for the socialization of stray dogs, where they will be treated, accustomed to life with people, and then find homes for them.
