A schoolteacher from Yakutia discovered a new species of snail and named it after the republic.

On January 2, in the scientific journal Ruthenica appeared an article about a new species of snail discovered by a village teacher Oh Khangalassky Ulus Procopius Nogovitsyn along with other members of the expedition. The new species of mollusk was named Vallonica yakutica - in honor of YakutiaProcopius discovered her in his native ulus not far from the Lena River.

The snail is known to live on the edges of larch forests near rivers. It feeds on fallen leaves. It takes two years to reach adulthood.

Scientists suggest that the snail may be found in other parts of Yakutia, but it may have been confused with a similar species.

New species of living organisms continue to be discovered in Russia. In 2019, camera traps on Novaya Zemlya got a new species of bird - the whinchat. And in the mountains of Dagestan - new plant species with heart-shaped leaves.
