The court in Barnaul did not take it seriously punish Former deputy Sergei Matasov, who was accused of large-scale fraud, was sentenced to four years' suspended imprisonment and fined 300 rubles. Furthermore, the former deputy was banned from holding legislative or representative positions for three years.

Sergei Matasov was accused of hiring two of his relatives as assistants while serving as deputy chairman of the Legal Policy Committee and leader of the Communists of Russia faction. In reality, they didn't work for him, but rather transferred their salaries to Matasov himself. Over four years—from 2021 to 2025—he thus received 3,2 million rubles allocated from the regional budget. The prosecutor's office requested a five-year prison sentence for the former deputy.
In his final statement at the trial, Matasov admitted his guilt, but stated, that the money was spent on “good causes” – the creation of the cultural and historical center “Stalin Center” and support for the “fight against resurgent fascism.”
