Drinking is 435 kilometers away. A Yakut village has imposed a dry law at the request of local residents.

A law banning the retail sale of any alcohol in the village of Andryushkino Nizhnekolymsky district received Il Tumen (State Assembly) in YakutiaResidents themselves asked the deputies to do this. 

"The initiative was prompted by serious social problems—alcoholism, crime, and rising mortality rates. A citizens' meeting was held in the village, and they [came forward] with the initiative to impose a complete ban on alcohol sales."- He explained head of the settlement administration Sergey Tretyakov at the discussion in Il Tumen. 

One entrepreneur was selling alcohol in the village, and now his business will be closed. If a resident of Andryushkino wants a drink, he'll have to travel to the nearest village of Chersky. The distance is 435 kilometer. 

Some scientists claim that northern peoples have virtually no resistance to alcohol. 

“Among Yakuts, [alcohol addiction] develops after 3 years, among Slavs born in Yakutia – after 5,9 years, among Slavic migrants – after 7,5 years.”- claims psychiatrist-narcologist, candidate of medical sciences, head of the laboratory of medical and social problems and human functional reserve of the Yakut Scientific Center for Complex Medical Problems Nyurguyana Matveeva. 

Leading researcher at the Institute of General Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences Svetlana Borinskaya I don't agree with this theory. She считаетthat the causes of “northern alcoholism” are lifestyle, social problems and lack of sun. 

Ранее in Yakutsk accepted The City Code is a code of conduct for local residents. It specifically states that intoxication in the local climate is a direct threat to life.
