"Strict-Security Unified State Exam" in Russian Schools: Cameras in Restrooms, Intrusive Searches, Better Deals in Moscow

Since June 1, high school students have been taking the Unified State Exam, the results of which are necessary for admission to universities and for obtaining a high school diploma. But it's not without its challenges.

— In Dagestan, four schoolgirls taking the Unified State Exam at Makhachkala Lyceum No. 39 were forced to take off their bras after a beeping sound was heard as they passed through the metal detector at the entrance. They proposed to conduct a hand-held detector test, but the regional education minister, Yahya Buchaev, demanded that the underwear be removed

The Ministry of Education commented on the information. According to the minister, "the examiners acted strictly within the letter of the law in these cases." The organizers are not authorized to conduct personal searches, so the student is asked to leave any personal belongings in a designated room if they come voluntarily.

"If a student refuses, they may not be allowed into the classroom, which means they won't pass the Unified State Exam," explained to the Ministry of Education.

In Samara, City Duma deputy Dmitry Aseyev filed a parliamentary inquiry requesting an investigation into the cameras in the restrooms of schools Nos. 94 and 110. Parents of schoolchildren also told him that water is prohibited on desks during exams, and medications are restricted.

“It’s important to remember: the people taking the exam are children and teenagers, not people kept in conditions of heightened isolation and total control… The exam should test knowledge, not resilience to stress created by organizational excesses,” считает Aseev.

— Schoolchildren from the Far East regions complain that it's more profitable for the western part of Russia to take the Unified State Exam. This year, the tasks for most of the exam in advanced mathematics were the same. But the tasks after the exam disperse via social networks and chats—but Far Eastern schoolchildren have no opportunity to look at new options and prepare for them.
