The "You Are Not Alone" foundation, created by the Anti-Corruption Foundation, Meduza, Mediazona, Dozhd, and the Support Service, raised 4,8 million rubles in the first four days of its week-long solidarity marathon. The main goal of this large-scale campaign is to raise funds to continue supporting Russian political prisoners throughout the next year.
Behind Bars for Their Position: How Many Political Prisoners Are There in Russia?
The current marathon aims to unite the efforts of human rights activists and civil society to help those imprisoned in pretrial detention centers and penal colonies for political reasons.
"It's difficult to estimate the exact number of political prisoners in Russia because, unfortunately, we don't know many of them. Human rights activists have different estimates, but overall, it's safe to say that over 3000 people are imprisoned for their stance," Ksenia Fadeeva, the marathon's coordinator, told NeMoskva.
According to her, over the course of three years, the "You Are Not Alone" foundation has raised a total of approximately 122 million rubles—with this money, more than 800 political prisoners and their families received the support they needed.
Where do the collected funds go and why are FSIN accounts replenished?
Donations are used to cover the most urgent needs of those behind bars. Specifically, the funds raised are used to pay for parcels and packages for political prisoners, provide them with qualified medical care, and provide small but regular support to families whose main breadwinner is in prison, as well as to recently released citizens. A major expense item is replenishing personal FSIN accounts.
"Cash is not allowed in pretrial detention centers and penal colonies, but each prisoner has their own account, which they can use to pay at the prison commissary," explained Ksenia Fadeeva. "We top up prisoners' FSIN accounts so they can buy groceries and essential hygiene products."
A special broadcast on Dozhd and a charity run around the world
The "You Are Not Alone" project marathon will run until June 14, but you can support political prisoners with your donations year-round. As part of the campaign, organizers have planned several major media and offline events.
