A hurricane in the South, nighttime drone attacks, the deaths of climbers, and a picket in Khabarovsk: NeMoskva news overnight

Another turbulent night passed across Russia's regions, marked by widespread natural disasters, a mountain tragedy, and yet another drone strike. We recount the key events that made the NeMoscow news overnight.

A devastating hurricane in the Rostov region and drone attacks

A powerful hurricane with heavy rain and gusts of up to 25 m/s has hit the Rostov Region. Local residents are reporting trees fallen on cars, downed power lines, and traffic jams. According to Governor Yuri Slyusar, power outages have been reported in at least 15 municipalities, including Rostov-on-Don, Azov, Bataysk, Taganrog, Shakhty, and Novocherkassk. Furthermore, the power outages have shut down pumping stations and disrupted water supplies.

Meanwhile, air attacks continue. A total of 133 drones were shot down over Russian regions last night, the Ministry of Defense reported. Specifically, air defense alert systems operated over the Belgorod, Bryansk, Kaluga, Kursk, Oryol, Rostov, Smolensk, Moscow, and Krasnodar regions.

An attack on Ukrainian territory, the tragedy on Elbrus, and a picket in Khabarovsk

In turn, Russia attacked Ukraine with 8 missiles and 136 drones, the Ukrainian Armed Forces reported. Although most of the attacks were repelled, impacts and debris falls were recorded in dozens of locations. For example, in Kyiv, fires broke out in warehouses, a parking lot, and a four-story building; a shopping center caught fire in Kryvyi Rih; and in the Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, and Kherson regions, shelling, airstrikes, and attacks left one person dead and at least 20 others injured.

Consequently, there were also tragedies in the mountains. Two climbers died while attempting to climb Mount Elbrus at an altitude of 5350 meters. Rescuers managed to locate two more members of the stranded tourist group, evacuate them, and hand them over to medical personnel. The search for the remaining members of the group continues.

Nevertheless, civil protests continue in the regions. In Khabarovsk, local activist Zigmund Khudyakov held another solo picket, appearing on the square wearing a T-shirt with a portrait of murdered opposition politician Boris Nemtsov. During the protest, Khudyakov read a poem he wrote about societal passivity and the right to dream of freedom.

Communal collapse in Novosibirsk

A serious utility incident is also being addressed in Siberia. In Novosibirsk, utility workers had to demolish garages 260 meters away from the pit to clear a clogged sewer line at the site of a 16-meter-long sinkhole in the Gorsky microdistrict. According to Deputy Mayor Iosif Kodalaev, this allowed access to the pipe for removal of construction debris while Gorvodokanal employees manually clear the aftermath of the accident from inside the sewer at night.

As a reminder, a massive sinkhole formed there two weeks ago. However, authorities now assure that the sinkhole walls have already been reinforced, cold water has been restored to all affected homes, and no further water shutoffs will be necessary.
