"Night of the Executed Poets"

On the night of August 12, 1952, those convicted in the case of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee were shot in the basements of Lubyanka. 

Among them are the poets Peretz Markish, Lev Kvitko, David Gofshtein, Itsik Fefer, the prose writer David Bergelson, the head of the Soviet Information Bureau Solomon Lozovsky, the actor and director of the Moscow Jewish Theater Veniamin Zuskin. 

The event went down in history as the “night of the executed poets” – although of the 13 executed, four were poets and one prose writer.
