Where, where? In Non-Moscow! The village of Veliky Vrag

There are many unusual names on the map of the country: village Freezer and the village Greedy people, and recently we talked about villages Yes Yes и FutureToday's story is about a village with a frightening name. The Great Enemy.

📍Located on the right bank of the Volga in the Nizhny Novgorod region, adjacent to the town of Kstovo. The village is quite charming: several streets with quite "peaceful" names, shops and a cafe-bakery, a well-maintained holy spring, and a wooden Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God Built in 1792. This is architectural monument Federal significance. The village is home to the Upper Volga Emergency Rescue and Environmental Operations Unit, which collects non-hazardous waste and eliminates the consequences of environmental disasters, including pollution.

About 600 people live in the village.

📍The village's history has not seen any enemies, let alone great ones. Since the 14th century, it has housed the men's hermitage (monastic settlement) of the Moscow Simonov Monastery. The Tsar visited the Velikovrazhskaya Hermitage on February 2, 1550, during his second campaign against Kazan. Ivan the TerribleIn memory of the event, the tsar left an icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker of Myra in Lycia here. And in 1628, the tsar visited the hermitage. Mikhail Fedorovich and donated an icon of Our Lady of Kazan to the church. It still resides in the church. In 1723, the hermitage was abolished and converted into a parish.

📍There are two versions of the origin of the name. One by one of them, the Moscow prince Dmitry Donskoy He granted these lands to the Moscow Simonov Monastery for their significant assistance in the victory at Kulikovo Field over the Tatar-Mongols—the great enemy of Rus'. The second, as usual, is more prosaic: "enemy" in Old Russian is a ravine. A ravine that flows into the Volga. A dam has now been built on this site.

📍The Great Enemy is a picturesque and atmospheric place, in it filmed several famous films: "The Method," "Once Upon a Time Lived an Old Man and an Old Woman," "Russian Field." The first film was shot here in 1974—the legendary "Aniskin and Fantomas".
