Fuel oil leaks from tankers in the Kerch Strait continue despite official statements.

Despite the official announcement that oil product pumping has been completed, fuel oil continues to leak from the tankers sunk in the Kerch Strait. New satellite images show distinct oil slicks in the areas where the stern of the Volgoneft-212 and the bow of the Volgoneft-239 sank.

Satellite monitoring data and spot direction

In particular, specialists from the Sky Eye monitoring project note that leaking oil products, under the influence of winds and currents, are actively spreading in southwest and southeast directions.

As a result, independent experts are questioning the government's reports. Project analysts explain current situation:

Apparently, the completion of fuel oil pumping, announced by the commission, simply means a halt to operations and does not equate to an end to the leakage of oil products from the tankers. This may be due to the technical impossibility of removing every last liter of fuel oil from the tankers.

Official statements from authorities and regulatory agencies

Earlier, on August 21, the government commission for the liquidation of the consequences of the disaster in the Kerch Strait officially announced on the final completion of pumping fuel oil from the sunken fragments of the tankers Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239.

Consequently, the results of the work performed at that time were officially confirmed by a special commission, which included representatives of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, Rosprirodnadzor, and the Marine Rescue Service. However, actual satellite data refutes claims of the complete elimination of the environmental threat.
