A memorial to ten graduates who died in the "SVO" (Severny Military District) was unveiled at a school in the Kursk region. The village has a population of less than 1,500.

An "important and touching event" took place at Ushakovskaya School in Kamyshi, Kursk Oblast: the unveiling of a memorial dedicated to ten school graduates who died in the war with Ukraine. This was announced on the school's VKontakte page.

The population of the village of Kamyshi, according to the 2010 census, was only 1370 people.

The growth of memorials in small towns

Russian authorities don't publish the death toll in the "SVO," but the number of such memorials is growing across the country. The highest percentage of fatalities (as a percentage) are in very small villages and towns.

• On July 24, a memorial plaque and the "Alley of Memory of the SVO Participants" were unveiled in the village of Arkhangelskoye in the Zabaikalsky Krai. The plaque bears 14 names. Arkhangelskoye has a population of 575, of which 140 are of working age.
• On May 2, a memorial to 20 people killed in the war in Ukraine was unveiled in the village of Znamenskoye in the Sverdlovsk region. However, while preparations were underway for the grand opening, two more bodies were brought to the village, necessitating the addition of two more portraits. The village has a population of 700.
• In the Transbaikal village of Undino-Posel'ye, population 737, at least 33 men went to the "SVO." Fifteen of them died, and two more are missing. There is no memorial yet: local activists are only planning to create one.

Loss data

On September 21, Mediazona published a new figure for Russians killed in the war: 258,989. This figure only includes those whose names are known; the actual number of dead is much higher.
