A microbiologist from Perm has been included in Stanford University's rankings.
Irina Ivshina, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences and professor Perm State National Research University, got in the annual ranking of World's Top 2% Scientists 2026.
The ranking is compiled by Stanford University researchers and Elsevier using the Scopus database. It includes researchers with the highest citation indexes.
⠀⠀
Over many years, Ivshina has collected and characterized the world's largest collection of hydrocarbon-feeding bacteria. These strains are purchased by laboratories around the world.

The collection has not only scientific but also practical applications. For example, in 1994, Usinsk в Komi An oil pipeline burst—the accident was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest pollution incident on Earth. A Perm laboratory, together with Moscow State University and oil industry researchers, developed a biological treatment system: bacteria processed oil in the soil, which was much cheaper than burning the earth.
