Just like everyone else: deer were counted in the Caucasus Nature Reserve.

Caucasian red deer are counted every year in the fall. During this time, they are in rutting season and become much less wary, making the work of volunteers and scientists easier.

During the rut, deer form mating parties—called lekking mating groups. The strongest males acquire a "harem" of 4-8 females.

They compete for the attention of the female deer, and both old and young can win.

"Age means experience, respectability, and tradition. Youth means impudence, brashness, arrogance, and lawlessness. Basically, deer are just like people."“- says one of the participants in the survey.

Watch how deer fight for females - in video, which was shared by one of the volunteers.
