"There's a little timid fox inside each of us."
May 18 out A documentary about the life of a fox cub named Veter, born and raised in Kamchatka. Filmed in the Kronotsky Nature Reserve over three years.
Environmental project staff "The earth touches everyone" have talked с Anna and Dmitry Shpilenok — the film's screenwriter and director. Here are a few quotes from it:
Working in the task force involved close observation of animals. One day, Anatoly Lazarenko went for a swim in the river and left his jacket on the bank. A fox came running, grabbed his jacket, and ran. All his documents, passports, were in there. What else could he do? Tolik ran after the fox, but the fox wouldn't let go of the jacket, running with it at breakneck speed. He must have run 1,5 kilometers. They finally managed to get the jacket out of the fox's hands, only to discover they'd run into a very bear-infested area. And there he was, naked, standing with only his jacket and identification identifying him as an operative, surrounded by bears. How scared he'd been!
When taking on a project like this, you have to understand that this is wild nature, not a cage. Animals can migrate to another area, be displaced by competitors, like foxes, or be killed by a predator, or children can die. Our goal is to make a family film with children and puppies. So we needed to immediately find a couple with a good chance of having puppies. We began filming several families simultaneously, because any story could end at any moment. It only became clear that the story revolved around Veter in the second year of filming.
There's a trend for keeping fox cubs as pets in apartments. Firstly, it's illegal. Secondly, imagine this: we've seen foxes run dozens of kilometers a day. But when they're confined to a small enclosure or an apartment, they begin to suffer and make unusual sounds. They cry and express their feelings of "I can't live like this anymore," and people are touched, filming and sharing it.
