10 August 1964 year
Yegor (Igor) Letov, leader of the cult punk band "Civil Defense," was born in Omsk.
Over our native land, over our fatherland, a frenzied snow was falling
I bought a magazine "Korea" - it's good there too
Comrade Kim Il Sung is there, it’s the same as ours
I'm sure they have the same thing -
And everything goes according to plan
His father was in the military. His brother, Sergei, is an improvising saxophonist. Yegor came to live with him in the Moscow region after finishing school in 1982. But his studies at the construction vocational school didn't work out. He returned to Omsk. He painted portraits of Lenin for propaganda boards and worked as a janitor and plasterer. In 1984, he and Kuzya Uo founded GrOb. The mother of one of the members reported him to the KGB.
There's a legion of cops for each of us.
There are a million Lyubers for each of us
There are echelons of soldiers for each of us
And hordes of majors from the State Security Committee
Letov was a prolific composer. The band quickly became popular, and not just in Siberia. This irritated the authorities. In 1985, Letov was sent to a psychiatric hospital for compulsory treatment.
I was on "intensive care," on antipsychotics... These are suppressive drugs that make a person a moron. The effect is similar to a lobotomy... At some point, I realized that to avoid going crazy, I had to create.
The brother allegedly promised to hold a press conference with foreign journalists and explain that there was no perestroika in the USSR, but rather punitive medicine. Be that as it may, Letov was released.
To my every move
Their reaction is predictable
At best, indifference
In the worst case, it is a pathology.
By the early 90s, he had recorded fifteen albums. He collaborated with Yanka Dyagileva. Then GrOb disbanded.
A partisan burned down his own house.
The strap tied in a knot
Ah, the cheerful grenade is bursting from the inside!
So how does a poem like this always end?
My Freedom knows this...
Then there was the project "Egor and the Obese." Then—GrOb again. He continued composing until the mid-2000s, attracting new waves of interest.
We are limitless, we are infinite
After all, all we have is our eternal
A good king and a familiar stench
He died in 2008 from cardiac arrest.
When I died
There was no one
Who would refute this?
