The artistic world of American Daniel Mason is also philosophically unique, but quite different. The story of several generations of inhabitants of a house lost in the woods is told in a different tone and in a different setting. Or rather, in one: the reader follows the stories of the characters (people, animals, trees, and sometimes bark beetles) through the interconnected space and time represented by the Massachusetts forests and four hundred years. This is a long and poetic book: eras and voices change, the narrative is interrupted by poems, letters, diary entries, and even an investigation—evidence that everything in the world has a beginning, an end, and a point of contact.
